Vermont Election Laws

Vermont Election Laws no longer require Vermont Towns to hold a yearly nomination caucus:  The sole purpose of which is to have a candidate for each vacant office.

The petition form must be submitted to the Town Clerk’s Office no later than 5:00 p.m. on January 26, 2026.  If you are interested in seeing someone’s name on the ballot, please do not hesitate to pick up a petition.

Special Election- Cannabis Opt In - Sample Ballot 2024
Background and Factors to Consider:

Excerpt from the March 18, 2024, Selectboard Meeting minutes: "Kevin Ohearn – Cannabis Dispensary in Beecher Falls – Mr. Ohearn came in to ask the selectboard what his next steps are to open a cannabis dispensary in Beecher Falls. He is looking to open it in the building on the corner of the bridge and River Road in Beecher Falls. Zach informed the Selectboard and Mr. Ohearn that this will need to go to the town as an Australian ballot vote. This vote will need to be warned as with any election. Zach stated he will reach out to the State of Vermont and fellow clerks to see what the next steps for the town are. He will have more information for the next selectboard meeting."

Excerpt from the April 15, 2024 Selectboard Meeting Minutes: "Cannabis Dispensary Ballot Vote – The board discussed the pending request. They decided that it would be best to wait until the August primaries to complete the vote. The board discussed the possibility of the requestor getting a petition requesting the vote to happen at a different date. They decided to deal with this as it came about."

An important note to remember is that although these proceedings have begun at the request of a single individual. This vote will set a precedent for anyone looking to open a cannabis retail location within Canaan or Beecher Falls. Two other important factors are that the vote can be rescinded at any time following a new election pertaining to the Town opting out. The second point is that although the Town may opt-out at any point, any establishments created during the opt-in period will be grandfathered and can remain operational.
