PUBLIC NOTICE
ORDINANCE REGULATING THE USE OF ALL-TRERRAIN VEHICLES
FOR THE TOWN OF CANAAN, VT
PURSUANT TO 24 V.S.A. CHAPTER 59
On July 9, 2026, the topic of the above ordinance was discussed at a regularly scheduled Selectboard meeting, which appeared as an agenda item. On July 23, 2026, the Selectboard of the Town of Canaan, Vermont adopted a newly revised and rewritten Ordinance Regulating the Use of All-Terrain Vehicles for the Town of Canaan, VT pursuant to 24 V.S.A. Chapter 59. This notice is published pursuant to 24 V.S.A. § 1972 to inform the public of the ordinance and of the citizens’ right to petition for a vote to disapprove the ordinance.
Title 24 V.S.A. § 1973 grants citizens the right to petition for a vote at a special or annual Town Meeting to disapprove ordinances adopted by the Selectboard. To exercise this right, citizens must present to the Selectboard or the Town Clerk a petition for a vote on the question of disapproving the ordinance signed by not less than five percent (5%) of the Town’s qualified voters. The petition must be presented within forty-four (44) days following the date of the adoption of the ordinance (September 5, 2026). Unless a petition requesting a vote is filed pursuant to 24 V.S.A. § 1973, the aforementioned ordinance shall become effective sixty (60) days from the date of said adoption (September 21, 2026).

FIRE PERMITS - Canaan and Beecher Falls Residents
No person shall kindle or authorize to kindle a fire in the open air for the purpose of burning brush, weeds, grass or rubbish of any kind except where there is snow in the site, without permission from the Canaan Fire Warden. Persons in violation are subject to fines pursuant to 10 V.S.A. Ch. 83 §2645.

PART-TIME HIGHWAY & GENERAL MAINTENANCE POSITION
Town of Canaan, Vermont
The Town of Canaan is accepting applications for a part-time Highway and General Maintenance employee. This position is expected to average approximately 24–30 hours per week during the spring, summer, and fall. From November through April, the position may average close to 40 hours per week depending upon weather and winter maintenance needs.
This position may be filled independently or combined with the Town’s part-time Water and Wastewater position for a qualified applicant interested in working across both departments.
Job Summary
The employee performs work involving the operation and maintenance of the Town Highway Department and assists with the general maintenance of Town buildings, facilities, and grounds.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Snowplowing and sanding Town roads and parking areas;
- Road grading, ditching, road repair, and culvert work;
- Mowing, trimming, brush cutting, and chainsaw operation;
- Operating and maintaining trucks, equipment, and hand tools;
- Performing minor maintenance and repairs on Town equipment and facilities; and
- Assisting other Town departments when necessary.
Winter snow removal requires availability outside regular working hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. The employee will be expected to participate in the Town’s winter on-call schedule and respond to weather-related and other emergencies.
Qualifications
Applicants with experience with snowplowing, equipment operation, road maintenance, construction, landscaping, mechanical work, or a related field are preferred. Applicants must be able to work safely and independently while maintaining effective working relationships with other employees, Town departments, outside agencies, and the public.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent;
- Valid driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record;
- Ability to pass required drug and alcohol testing;
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in varying weather conditions; and
- Willingness to learn, follow instructions, and work cooperatively as part of a team.
Compensation
Hourly wage will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

NOTICE OF INSPECTION & PUBLIC HEARING REGARDING
THE RECLASSIFICATION OF:
A PORTION OF PENN ROAD FROM A CLASS III HIGHWAY TO A CLASS IV HIGHWAY &
COOK STREET FROM A CLASS III HIGHWAY TO A CLASS IV HIGHWAY
The Town of Canaan Selectboard hereby gives notice pursuant to 19 V.S.A. § 701 et seq. of public hearing to consider the reclassification of a portion of Penn Road (0.40 Miles or 2,112 Feet) from a Class III Highway to a Class IV Highway and the entirety of Cook Street (0.10 Miles or 528 Feet) from a Class III Highway to a Class IV Highway.
The proposed reclassification for Penn Road encompasses a 0.40-mile segment of the road . The Selectboard is considering whether this portion of Penn Road continues to meet the statutory designations of its current classification. The proposed reclassification will begin 0.50 miles from the intersection of Penn Road and Vermont Route 114 and continue 0.40 miles to the end of Penn Road.
The proposed reclassification for Cook Street will encompass the entirety of the street (0.10 Miles). The Selectboard is considering whether Cook Street continues to meet the statutory designations of its current classification. The proposed reclassification for Cook Street will begin where the street intersects Vermont Route 114. It will continue for the entirety of the street.
The site inspection for the proposed reclassification of Penn Road will be held on August 31, 2026, at 5:30 P.M. The site inspection will occur at the beginning of the proposed reclassification. The site inspection for the proposed reclassification of Cook Street will be held on August 31, 2026, at 5:45 P.M. The site inspection will occur at the beginning of Cook Street.
Further notice is hereby given that on August 31, 2026, the Selectboard shall conduct the hearing for the proposed reclassifications. This will be in conjunction with the regularly scheduled Selectboard meeting and will begin at 6:00 PM, at the Canaan Town Office.

Canaan Rec Park Committee Meeting Date Change - March 16, 2026
The Canaan Recreation Park Comittee Meeting will now be held on the second Tuesday of each month at 5:00 P.M. at the Canaan Town Office.

NOTICE
CANAAN, BEECHER FALLS, AND LEMINGTON RESIDENTS
The Household Hazardous Waste Event for Canaan, Beecher Falls & Lemington residents will be held on Friday, September 11, 2026 from 12:00pm to 4:00pm and on Saturday, September 12, 2026 from 8:00am to 1:00pm at the Canaan Transfer Station – 186 Treatment Plant Road, Canaan, VT 05903.
The list of acceptable items can be picked up at either the Transfer Station, Town Office or found on our Town website http://www.canaan-vt.org.
This event and the one in May were made possible by a generous $3,000 grant from the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation Solid Waste Program.

NOTICE OF EXTENDED TRANSFER STATION HOURS – TOWN OF CANAAN, VT
Effective Friday, June 5, 2026, the Town of Canaan Transfer Station will extend its Friday hours.
The Town has heard the concerns of residents that the current Transfer Station hours may prevent individuals who work later in the day from having ample time to use the facility.
For this reason, beginning June 5, the Transfer Station will remain open every Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. We hope this change will make it easier for residents who work during the day to access the Transfer Station.
The Town will also be installing lighting at the Transfer Station soon to ensure the facility is properly lit during the fall and winter months as the days become shorter.
The Transfer Station hours will be as follows:
Wednesday: 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Friday: 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Saturday: 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as the Town works to make the Transfer Station more accessible for residents.
