PART-TIME HIGHWAY & GENERAL MAINTENANCE POSITION
Town of Canaan, Vermont
The Town of Canaan is accepting applications for a part-time Highway and General Maintenance employee. This position is expected to average approximately 24–30 hours per week during the spring, summer, and fall. From November through April, the position may average close to 40 hours per week depending upon weather and winter maintenance needs.
This position may be filled independently or combined with the Town’s part-time Water and Wastewater position for a qualified applicant interested in working across both departments.
Job Summary
The employee performs work involving the operation and maintenance of the Town Highway Department and assists with the general maintenance of Town buildings, facilities, and grounds.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Snowplowing and sanding Town roads and parking areas;
- Road grading, ditching, road repair, and culvert work;
- Mowing, trimming, brush cutting, and chainsaw operation;
- Operating and maintaining trucks, equipment, and hand tools;
- Performing minor maintenance and repairs on Town equipment and facilities; and
- Assisting other Town departments when necessary.
Winter snow removal requires availability outside regular working hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. The employee will be expected to participate in the Town’s winter on-call schedule and respond to weather-related and other emergencies.
Qualifications
Applicants with experience with snowplowing, equipment operation, road maintenance, construction, landscaping, mechanical work, or a related field are preferred. Applicants must be able to work safely and independently while maintaining effective working relationships with other employees, Town departments, outside agencies, and the public.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent;
- Valid driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record;
- Ability to pass required drug and alcohol testing;
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in varying weather conditions; and
- Willingness to learn, follow instructions, and work cooperatively as part of a team.
Compensation
Hourly wage will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
