Health & Public Safety

The Town of Canaan has excellent access to health care and public safety resources serving residents and the surrounding region. The Beecher Falls Volunteer Fire Department, located in Beecher Falls, is known for its quick response times and the professionalism and dedication of its volunteers, who provide fire protection and emergency assistance to the community.

In addition to local services, the town is able to call upon several regional and state agencies when assistance is needed, including the Vermont State Police, the Essex County Sheriff’s Department, and the United States Border Patrol, all of which contribute to maintaining public safety in this border community.

Emergency medical services for the area are provided through a regional Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system made up of neighboring communities. This cooperative system helps ensure that residents of the North Country receive reliable and timely emergency medical care.

For hospital services, Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital, located approximately eight miles from Canaan in Colebrook, New Hampshire, provides comprehensive medical care with modern facilities and a dedicated team of healthcare professionals. Long-term and skilled nursing care for the region is available through the Coös County Nursing Hospital in West Stewartstown, New Hampshire, which offers high-quality services for senior citizens and others requiring specialized care.
