7) Arsenic Treated Wood – See Treated Wood
8) Asbestos – Not accepted at Transfer Station. Must be handled carefully. For disposal information contact Agency of Natural Resources at 802-863-7236 or toll free at 800- 863-7236 for a list of licensed asbestos abatement contractors.
9) Aseptic – These are non – metal or plastic drinking containers usually for milk and juices etc. Dispose with household trash.
10) Ashes – Can be disposed of at Stump Dump or spread on lawn or garden.
11) Asphalt – Can be disposed of at Stump Dump.
12) Automobiles – Will have to be taken to a licensed salvage yard.
13) Aluminum Cans – Recycling Container
14) Aluminum Plates/Pie Plates – Recycling Container

✓ Products B:
1) Ballasts – If they don't contain PCB, they can be recycled using the metal container. Ballasts with PCB’s bring to HHW Events Scheduled Spring and Fall. Dates will be advertised.
2) Batteries, Lead Acid. – Can be recycled at the Transfer Station
3) Batteries, Alkaline – Can be recycled at the Transfer Station or the Town Office (318 Christian Hill)
4) Batteries, Rechargeable – Can be recycled at the Transfer Station or the Town Office (318 Christian Hill)
5) Books – Remove hard cover and place in regular trash. The rest of the book can be placed in the paper bin with the junk mail, magazines.
6) Bubble Wrap – Regular household trash.
7) Building Materials (Residential Only, No Contractors) – C&D container – Fee based
8) Bulky Materials (Residential Only, No Contractors) – C&D container – Fee Based
9) Box Spring – Outer wrap must be removed and disposed with regular trash. Metal spring can be disposed of in metal disposal container. Clean wood frame can be disposed of at Stump Dump or be used in the garden for climbing plants. There will be an extra fee charged if the operator breaks down the box spring for disposal.
✓ Products C:
1) CDs and CD Cases – Regular household trash.
2) Cans, Tin – Recycling container.
3) Cardboard – Recycling bin. ALL BOXES HAVE TO BE BROKEN DOWN! No pizza boxes dispose of these in regular household trash.
4) Carpet (Residential Only, No Contractors) – C&D container must be rolled up – Fee based
5) Cat Litter – Regular household trash or composting.
6) Catalogs – Paper recycling container.
7) Cell Phones – Remove personnel information and batteries. Dispose in container for cell phones. If casing is metal dispose in metal container or regular household trash.
8) Christmas Trees – Stump Dump will be opened after Christmas to accept these trees.
9) Cleaning Products – HHW Events Scheduled Spring and Fall. Dates will be advertised.
10) Clothing – Good clothing can be dropped off at local collection sites.

12) Construction and Demolition (Residential Only, No Contractors) – C&D Container – Fee based.
13) Copier Toner – Can be dropped off at place of purchase and often you will get a recycling deposit refund.

1) Doors (Residential Only, No Contractors) – C&D Container – Fee based. Some doors will be held out by the operator if in good shape for residents’ personal use.

1) Egg Cartons – Recycle in paper container.
2) Electronics – Recycle – See operator. There is no charge for disposal. Then place in the Electronic Containers. For more information about what is eligible for this program visit canaan–vt.org and hover on the Transfer Station tab and click Electronics.
1) Fire Extinguishers – Empty canisters can be recycled using metal container. Full canisters can be disposed at the HHW Events Scheduled Spring and Fall. Dates will be advertised.
2) Fireworks, Explosives – Call Essex County Sheriff’s Department 802-676-2077.
3) Fluorescent Bulbs, CFLs – Accepted for Recycling.
4) Food Donations – All non-perishable food items that you no longer wish to use can be donated to Northeast Kingdom Community Action Center, 253 Gale Street, 802- 266-7134. Please ensure all food items are not outdated.
5) Food Scraps – Do home compost if you can. We are now accepting scraps on Saturdays. We have handouts available to let you know what we are accepting.
6) Freezers – Refrigerator – Coos County Transfer Station (West Stewartstown, NH) Visit canaan-vt.org for more information or ask the Canaan Transfer Station Attendant.
7) Furniture – C&D container – Fee based. Furniture that could be reused will be held out by the operator. Sofa and recliners will have to be stripped down of all textile materials, metal, and clean wood. The metal and clean wood can be recycled. The textile materials will go into household trash.

1) Gas, Oil Mixed – HHW Events Scheduled Spring and Fall. Dates will be advertised.
2) Glass – C&D (Residential Only, No Contractors) container if its window glass, mirrors, dishes. All other glass can be recycled in glass recycling container.
3) Garden Waste – Dispose of at Stump Dump or personal compost pile.
✓ Products H (Hazardous):
1) Household Hazardous Waste – The Town of Canaan hosts two HHW events throughout the year, one in the spring and the other in the Fall. For a complete list of items accepted at these events visit canaan-vt.org and click on the HHW tab.
2) Hydraulic Fluids – HHW Events Scheduled Spring and Fall. Dates will be advertised.
3) Hypodermic Needles – Put-on heavy-duty gloves and use pliers or tongs to place the needle in a thick plastic container like a laundry detergent bottle. Screw on the lid and seal it well with strong tape, like duct tape. Write “Do Not Recycle” on the container and throw it away in the regular trash.

4) Medications – Call the Essex County Sheriff’s Department 802 – 626 – 3500 for information on disposal or visit the Walgreen’s Pharmacy and UCVH Drop Off Containers (Located in Colebrook, NH).
5) Metal Scrap (Residential Only, No Contractors) – All recycled in the metal container.
6) Microwave Ovens – Recycled in the metal container.
7) Mothballs – HHW Events Scheduled Spring and Fall. Dates will be advertised.
8) Motor Oil – Accepted weekly at transfer station. Only used oil that is not contaminated with water etc. Mixed oil and water are accepted at HHW Events Scheduled Spring and Fall. Dates will be advertised.
9) Musical Instruments – If they are still useable check with the school to see if a student could use the instrument. If they are not able to be reused dispose of in metal container.
10) Mattress – Mattresses are accepted and can be disposed of in the C&D container. All mattresses must have the covering removed and this can be disposed of in household trash. The spring can be disposed of in the metal container.

1) Newspaper – All newspaper can be disposed of in the newspaper bin.

1) Oil Filters – Oil filters are accepted at the Transfer Station.

1) Packing Materials – Dispose of with household trash.
2) Paint Cans, Empty – If paint is dry in the can, they can be disposed of in the recycling container.
3) Pallets – Pallets that have painted wood have to be disposed of in the C&D container. If the pallets are in good shape, we will set aside to use at the transfer station or give away or can be disposed of at the Stump Dump.
4) Paper and Paper Bags – All low – grade paper goes in the paper bin.
5) Pesticides – HHW Events Scheduled Spring and Fall. Dates will be advertised.
6) Pharmaceuticals – Call the Essex County Sheriff’s Department 802 – 626 – 3500 for information on disposal or visit the Walgreen’s Pharmacy and UCVH Drop Off Containers (Located in Colebrook, NH).
7) Pill Bottles – Go into regular trash but first remove identifiers from bottle.
