| How to Purchase a Cemetery Plot? |
Selecting and purchasing a Cemetery Plot in the Town of Canaan is easy and simple. The three cemeteries in the Town of Canaan are open to anyone, so whether you want your final resting place to be in the town you live in, grew up in, or have family in, Canaan is open to you. The three cemeteries are as follows: Alice Hunt Cemetery (Located on VT RTE 114 heading towards Wallace Pond), South Canaan Cemetery (Located on VT RTE 102 heading towards Colebrook, NH), and Village Cemetery (Located on Christian Hill, next to the American Legion).

Alice Hunt Cemetery
The Alice Hunt Cemetery has a few different burial plots to choose from:

To purchase anyone of these lots you must first come into the Town Office to see which plots are available for sale. The Alice Hunt Cemetery has every type of lot available but location will vary. At the Town Office you will be able to look at the Cemetery Plot Index (linked below) and the Cemetery Survey Map, which will show which plots are taken and which are available. Once you have selected your plot you will need to pay the two one time fees, listed below. Prices vary between lot size. After you have paid the total cost, the Town Clerk will prepare a Cemetery Plot deed for you. Once the deed is signed by both yourself and the Selectboard the plot is yours.

South Canaan and Village Cemeteries
The South Canaan and Village Cemeteries both have a single option for a burial plot - Double Lot 10' x 10'.
To purchase a double lot in either of the cemeteries you must first come into the Town Office to see which plots are available for sale. At the Town Office you will be able to look at the Cemetery Plot Index (linked below) and the Cemetery Survey Map, which will show which plots are taken and which are available. Once you have selected your plot you will need to pay the two one time fees - Cost of the Lot: $100.00 and Perpetual Care: $200.00. After you have paid the total cost of $300.00, the Town Clerk will prepare a Cemetery Plot deed for you. Once the deed is signed by both yourself and the Selectboard the plot is yours.
